Juneteenth: Freedom, the Last to Know, and the Fight for Environmental Justice

Juneteenth, celebrated each year on June 19th, is a powerful reminder of delayed freedom. It marks the day in 1865 when enslaved Black people in Texas finally learned they were free—two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This lingering delay in knowledge is a wound in our nation’s history, a testament to how some truths take far too long to be fully realized.

As we honor Juneteenth, we see echoes of that delayed freedom in the environmental justice movement - often Black and historically impacted communities—are the last to know when it comes to harm, and the last to benefit when progress is made.

In many ways, the stories of Juneteenth and environmental justice are intertwined. The same systemic forces that kept people enslaved also pushed them to the margins of environmental risk. From toxic waste sites to polluted air, these communities bear a disproportionate burden of environmental degradation. Just like the delayed freedom of the enslaved in Texas, the solutions to environmental injustices often come too late for those who suffer most.

Yet, just as Juneteenth is a celebration of resilience and a beacon of hope, so too is the movement for environmental justice. Across the country, grassroots organizers, often from these same marginalized communities, are fighting for clean air, safe water, and a livable planet. They remind us that freedom is not just the absence of chains but also the presence of justice—in every breath, every step, and every drop of water.

As we celebrate Juneteenth this year, let’s remember that freedom is still unfolding. The last to know once, many of us can help ensure that no one is last again—especially when it comes to environmental justice. May this Juneteenth be a call to action, a time to honor the past, and a step toward a future where all can breathe free, unburdened by injustice.
