Featured Key Note
Roxanne Shanté is a pioneering force in hip hop, widely recognized as one of the first female MCs to rise to national prominence and help shape the culture in its earliest days. Born Lolita Shanté Gooden and raised in the Queensbridge Houses in New York City, she grew up in one of the most influential neighborhoods in hip hop history. Surrounded by the emerging sounds of the culture, Shanté began rapping at a young age, quickly gaining a reputation for her sharp wit, lyrical skill, and fearless delivery.
At just 14 years old, she burst onto the scene with “Roxanne’s Revenge,” a response track that became a groundbreaking hit and sparked what became known as the “Roxanne Wars,” one of hip hop’s earliest and most iconic rap battles. As a member of the legendary Juice Crew, she stood alongside some of the most influential figures in the genre, solidifying her place in hip hop history.
Throughout her career, Roxanne Shanté broke barriers for women in a male-dominated industry, using her voice to command respect and create space for future generations of female artists. Her impact extends far beyond music—she is celebrated as a cultural pioneer whose influence helped define the sound, spirit, and competitive edge of hip hop.
Today, Roxanne Shanté’s legacy continues to inspire, representing resilience, authenticity, and the power of being first.
